Last Thursday, May 19, Professor Martín Iglesias, from the Faculty of Chemistry of the Autonomous University of Mexico, gave a conference on "Steroid Chimeras".
In Greek mythology, chimeras were monstrous hybrid creatures made up of parts from different animals, but now the term is often used to describe anything that is made up of wildly disparate parts, or is highly imaginative, implausible, or chemically dazzling.
Steroid chemistry remains a field in which new and complex challenges are constantly emerging and being solved. The assembly of steroid nuclei into unprecedented entities involves an exercise in creativity that leads to chimeric compounds that assemble units not known in nature.
