    Capillary electrophoresis (CE) has become an established method with widespread recognition as an analytical technique of choice in numerous analytical laboratories, including industrial and academic sectors. Pharmaceutical and biochemical research and quality control are the most important CE applications. This book provides a comparative assessment of related techniques on mode selection, method development, detection, and quantitative analysis and estimation of pharmacokinetic parameters and broadens the understanding of modern CE applications, developments, and prospects. It introduces the fundamentals of CE and clearly outlines the procedures used to mitigate several barriers, such as detection limits, signal detection, changing capillary environment, resolution separation of analytes, and hyphenation of mass spectrometry with CE, for a range of analytical problems. Each chapter outlines a specific electrophoretic variant with detailed instructions and some standard operating procedures.     The study of xenobiotic metabolism is a key feature for the pharmaceutical and chemical industries since it is a determining factor both in the preclinical development of new drugs and in the toxicity evaluation of chemicals. Metabolic reactions usually make xenobiotics more polar and easier to be excreted and can be classified into two groups attending to the nature of the molecule modification. Phase I includes some reactions that generally lead 278to the introduction or uncovering of key functional groups (e.g., OH, COOH, NH2, and SH) increasing the molecule polarity, which may facilitate removal from the body. The main enzymatic system responsible for phase I reactions is the cytochrome P450 (CYP), despite other enzymes can also be involved. In phase II metabolism, there is a conjugation between the xenobiotic and some endogenous molecules or groups. It increases the molecule size, favoring its excretion and usually its inactivation. Not all compounds suffer phase I and II processes. Some compounds are directly eliminated after a phase I metabolic reaction or after a phase II conjugation
