On the design of archaeological actions in the UV Master’s Degree in Archaeology

The subject entitled Design of Archaeological Actions, included in the UV Master’s Degree in Archaeology’s study plan, introduces students to the methods, techniques and procedures for the design and management of archaeological actions.

This subject is part of the theoretical-practical subject Archaeological Records in archaeological heritage and aims at introducing the student to the problems which derive from professional archaeological work, archaeological record management in its different stages and of its conservation and dissemination as cultural heritage. It includes the treatment of information and documentation, its administrative and business management aspects and the value of archaeological information as heritage and as a scientific document in several disciplines.

The subject on Design of Archaeological Actions includes four main parts: the Concept of Heritage, Design of Archaeological Actions:  from logistics to economic calculations, Regulations and administration procedures and Elements in business management: Conference. The teaching methodology planned for this subject is diversified into theoretical classes, taught at the Faculty of History and Geography (at the Blasco Ibañez Campus) and practical classes taught at the Computer room and at our lab which is almost a century old and counts with avant-garde market techniques. The students also attend conferences related to the subjects and which are taught by archaeological professionals; additionally, the subject includes guided visits to museum headquarters where the students can be in real contact with what they study within the classroom.

Once the students of the Master’s Degree in Archaeology have finished this subject, they will have enough knowledge to know the regulation frame related to heritage, administrative processes for its management and its specific business difficulties

Once the students of the Master’s Degree in Archaeology have finished this subject, they will have enough knowledge to know the regulation frame related to heritage, administrative processes for its management and its specific business difficulties. They will also know the potentiality derived from the analysis of biotic materials, putting emphasis on sampling systems and basic recognition of its diversity as well as the procedures and protocols related to the conservation and dissemination of heritage. Finally, the subject’s Workshop aims at making the student familiar with the use of several computer tools related to document management and result presentation.

Most definitely, this subject will allow students to have a basic knowledge on the management of bibliographical data; advanced use of spreadsheets for the treatment of information; an understanding of administrative procedures and business management problems. Additionally, the student may attend office and attention hours, planned for each professor, in order to make consultations on any topic or aspect related to the subject as well as with the development of the different assigned projects.
