The City Hall of Olocau will receive € 30,030 euros from the Valencian Council for the conservation and promotion of the walled town El Puntal dels Llops, included in the Route of the Iberians and declared Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) on 13 January. The deputy for Culture, Xavier Ríes, emphasised that this aid «contributes to maintain the Valencian archaeological heritage and to spread the word on its significance.»
The mayor of the municipality, Antonio Ropero, thanked the sensitivity showed by the provincial administration with this project. He also wanted to state that during this year 1200 people have already visited the archaeological site and that in reference to this aspect the local authorities have widen their tourist offer with family visits, dramatised tours or even night tours in summer and all of them are monitored by two Valencian archaeologists that will guide the visitors.
The Iberian town of El Puntal dels Llops is a settlement dated from the 5th B. C. and is located in Serra Calderona, in the municipality of Olocau, within the region of Camp de Túria. The site has a wall and a tower that make it a small 960 square metres fortress. It is part of a defensive and surveillance fortification and in Edeta’s city is considered one of the best examples of Atalaya in Iberian period. The intern structure of the town is very simple: it has 17 rooms that lead into a central main street that longitudinally goes through all the site.
The site was already listed at the beginning of the 20th century by the Prehistory Research Service (S.I.P.). It was excavated by Helena Bonet and Consuelo Mata between the years 1979 and 1988, with the scientific and financial support of S.I.P. In 1998 was undertaken a pioneer project in the Valencian Community consisting of the consolidation of the structures of masonry of the departments, walls and tower, under the direction of the Prehistory Museum of Valencia and the financing of the Ministry of Culture and the Department of Culture, Education and Science.
