The National University of La Plata will appoint Doctor “Honoris Causa” professor Joan Oleza Simó, coordinator of the Red de Excelencia de Patrimonio Teatral Clásico Español.

Joan Oleza, professor of the Master’s Degree in Hispanic Studies, will be appointed Doctor “Honoris Causa” on 22 November 2017, within the framework of the 4TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON CONTEMPORARY SPANISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE: Other transatlantic dialogs from and to Spain. 90 years after the 27 Generation.

The Governing Board of the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of the National University of La Plata highlights Oleza’s labour as Full University Professor of Spanish Literature at the Universitat de València between 1979 and 2016.

Professor Joan Oleza’s activism against Franco’s dictatorship, which was still effective when he started his academic career, is also underlined. On the other hand, his commitment to democratic normalisation during the years after the dictatorship and the intensive university management work as Head of Department (1979-1980 and 1985-1990), Secretary of the Faculty of Philology, Vice-dean (1978-1981) and Dean (1982-1985) stand out too.

Professor Oleza’s career has also been linked to the scientific background, an aspect that has also been valued since the UNLP: “production in the field of Spanish literature combining a high degree of specialisation with interdisciplinary crosses that insert literature in the great historical and cultural processes as a backbone” and his contribution to international Hispanism from various fields: classical Spanish theatre and scenic practices, 19th and 20th century narratives, Spanish exile of 1939, narrative of the political transition and the cultural turn in the era of communication.
