The Department of Medieval History, Historiographical Sciences and Techniques of the Universitat de València launch a new edition of Interdisciplinary Seminars of Medieval History and Cine.

Numerous are the movies in which, throughout cinema history, scenes and medieval legends have been interpreted and they have been a referent so the collective imagination can have a quick overview of lifestyle and cultural traditions that took place in the Middle Ages.

However, this period of time is becoming unknown for new generations because it is often associated with regressive stereotypes which lure the viewers to think history means improvement and progress.

On the other hand, depictions enhancing the greatness of elements and characters from the Middle Ages, the fantasy and mythical creatures with a significant role in the events are usually used as a source of attraction in the medieval stories movies.

That is why this second edition of “The Middle Ages in the cinema” (course 2016-2017) will reveal the undermine of the Middle Ages realities. The contradictions and deformations of the historic setting cinema will be analysed in order to make viewers reflect so they can have a depiction of the past not as distorted as, for instance, the one projected by Hollywood.

Seminars will take place from 8 February to 16 May 2017 in Joan Fuster assembly hall and classroom F3.4 of Faculty of Geography and History of Universitat de València.

Joan V.Garcia Marsilla, professor of History of Art, will lead the course, which will be opened at 10 am with the film The War Lord“ (1965), by the American director Franklin J. Schaffner.
