How to avoid post-vacation blues

Many workers who undertake significant changes in their daily routine while they are on vacation suffer different consequences when they go back to work.

Going back to work it’s a problem for 65% of the population, who suffer post-vacation blues. The employee’s welfare is threatened by the difficulty of adapting themselves to the working rhythm after a long vacation period. During these days, they go through important modification in aspects which directly influence health. Some of them are changes in schedules, in eating habits and in sports or leisure activity. The disconnection and disappearance of workload is necessary, but it can bring problems when this period is over.

Symptoms and consequences

The main health problems manifested after long vacation episodes are those of stress, depression and anxiety. One of the illnesses which have effects such as apathy or greater exhaustion have consequences on working performance. In the worst case, workers can suffer palpitations, shakings or breathing problems. Additionally, those who are vulnerable to suffer burnouts or mobbing are in greater risk of suffering problems after weeks of resting.

Post-vacations blues can be avoided by taking preventive measures

  • Stablishing a progressive return to work is one of the most important recommendations. The activity has to be picked up gradually. It is not advisable to try and solve the backlog work during the first few days.
  • Follow healthy eating and sleeping schedules so that your organism assumes the situation and can go back to its daily routine easily.
  • Enjoy the free time allowed by work. Making plans and programming activities to stablish good expectations also rise motivation. Entertainment in leisure breaks is fundamental.
  • Companies must try to create a good working environment in which gratification and confidence in workers are the main pillars of working spaces; they are organised in such a way that they benefit the worker’s welfare.
