Juan Luis Gandia and Ángeles Solanes

Juan Luis Gandia and Ángeles Solanes are the candidates who will compete in the second round for the Principle of the Universitat de València. At the elections held on March 3, Gandia has obtained 42,69% of the weighted votes and Solanes has received 38,93%. In third place, Carles Padilla with 11,89% and in forth Fran Ródenas with 6,47%. The voting for the second round will be on Thursday, March 12.

The results are provisional. The Electoral Commission proclaims the definitive results next Monday, March 9.

Among the PDI doctors with permanent links, Gandia has won with 23,40% of the weighted votes. Solanes has obtained 18,80%, Padílla has received 5,47% and Ródenas 3.32%. In collages with non-doctors or without any affiliation, Solanes has received 5,66%, Gandia 5,10%, Padilla 1,29% and Ródens 0,61%. Among members of research staff in training, the results were: Solanes (0,59%), Gandia (0.47%), Padilla (0,15%) and Ródenas (0.09%).

The students voted for Solanes in 11,89% of the weighted vote, for Gandia in 7,89%, for Padilla in 3,64% and for Ródenas in 1,47%. Lastly, among the PTGAS, Gandia won with 5,81% followed by Solanes with 1,83%, Padilla with 1,32% and Ródemas with 0,97%.

Total of 57,920 people were called to the polls. Among the PDI doctors with permanent links (2.359 people) has voted for the census. Of the Teaching and Research Staff without a PhD or permanent position (2,693), 36,65% went to the pulls. Among the 661 members of the research staff in training, 24,51% has voted. The Undergraduate and Postgraduate students, more than 49,246, has recorded a participation of 8,43%. And among the PTGAS (2,961) has voted 51,67%.

This is the second time where the four candidates are eligible for the Principal of the Universitat de Valéncia. In 2010 Esteban Morcillo, Maria Antonin García Benau, Vincent Soler and Antoni Furió were those who have applied for the position. Maria Antonina García Benau and Esteban Morcilla, reached to the second round. Morcillo won that round and was proclaimed Princiapal of the Universitat of València. While in 2018, there were also more than two candidates, breaking the election for the Princiapl tradition again, where for the majority of the election, there were only 2 candidates interested. That time, there were 3 candidates: Maria Vicenta Mestre, Vicent Martínez y Maria Antonia García Benau. It reached the second round between Vicent Martínez and Maria Vicenta Mestre. Maria Vincenta Mestre won the election and was the first female Princiapal in the history of the Universitat de València.

The results are calculated by the weighted voting system. This way, in accordance with Article 101 of the Statutes of the Universitat of València, the elections of the Princiapl are being held by direct voting and by universal, free and secret suffrage. The voting is weighted by sectors of the university community, as follows:

a) The vote of professors with permanent positions has the value of 51% of the total votes to nominations validly submitted by the university community.

b) The vote of faculty members who do not hold a doctorate or do not have a permanent position has the value of 12,74%

c) The vote of all of the students has the value of 25%

d) The vote of the administrative and service staff has the value of 10%

e) The vote of the research staff in training has the value of 1,33%

In accordance with this article, the candidate who obtains absolute majority in the weighted votes shall be proclaimed Principal in the first round of voting. If there is no absolute majority, a second round should be held.
