The "Model in vitro for steroid resistance in cultured human epithelial cells of airways: study of new drug targets": TRA2009-0311

Summary:

Corticosteroids are considered as the main anti-inflammatory drug-therapeutic resource in the treatment of a variety of inflammatory and immune diseases, among which include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, for decades corticoresistencia phenomena characterized by a lack of response is observed, not only inhaled steroids, but even at high doses of oral steroids.

The main objective of the project is the study of the molecular mechanisms associated with steroid resistance in an in vitro human epithelial cells of airways grown in system air-liquid interface model and the resulting inflammatory response activation of new drug targets .

The results have guided the objectives of R & D Almirall S.L. towards a new drug, the patent therefore based on the combination of two drugs (anticholinergic + corticosteroid) with synergistic activity in situations corticoresistance

The "Model in vitro for steroid resistance in cultured human epithelial cells of airways: study of new drug targets" project file number TRA2009-0311 has been funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, under the VI National plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation 2008-2011 ~ ANNEX II: Sub Projects oriented towards the transmission of knowledge to the company (TRACE) Fundamental Research.
