The UV wins first place in the Spanish Karate Championships

The Universitat de València’s karate team has won first place in the Spanish University Sports Championships.

This weekend the Spanish University Karate Championships was held in Albacete, hosted by the University of Castilla-La Mancha. The Universitat de València karate fighters, led by coach Arturo Olmedo, performed brilliantly and won first place in the team competition. 

María San Francisco, a student of the Degree in Nursing, won first place in the women’s Spanish Kata Championships. In the final, she took over the tatami and performed a Gangaku kata which earned her five points from the judges.

Sergio Renovell Codesido, a student of the Degree in Podiatry, won the silver medal in the men’s Kumite over 84kg category. He had outclassed his rival in the semifinals, but in the final the karate fighter of the University of Oviedo came out on top.

Iván Ferrer Real, a student of the Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Science, won the bronze medal in the men’s Kumite under 84kg. During the semifinals he unfortunately lost to karate fighter from the University of Malaga, who won the gold medal in this category.

Insaf Bentama-Serroukh Jerabi, a student of the Degree in Medicine, won the bronze medal in the women’s Kumite under 50kg category, after losing a very tight semifinal.

Caribe Lorenzo Catalán, a student of the Degree in Nursing, and Marcos Goda López,  a student of the Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Science, did not win any medals, but they made fifth and seventh place in the Kata respective categories.

Alba Quiles Sánchez, Raul Frances Garcia, Rubén Martínez Jiménez, Miguel Álvarez Jimena, Marta Ten Quilis and María Hidalgo Méndez also participated in the competition.
