The Universitat de València wins 20 new medals at the Spanish University Championships

The Spanish University Championships (CEU) continue to be held and the team of UV athletes have added 3 golds, 9 silvers and 8 bronzes to their track record in the disciplines of football, volleyball, rugby, basketball, swimming, archery and badminton.

The UV women's football team won the Spanish University Championships in a competition that was held from 24 to 27 April in Zaragoza. The UV girls started the tournament in style, with a 6-0 win over the University of the Basque Country in the group stage.  The next match was played against the Catholic University of Valencia, which they beat with a score of 8-0. And in the final, the UV team played a great game against the girls of the Technical University of Madrid, beating them by 5 goals to 1, taking home a well-deserved national gold medal.

In volleyball, the Universitat de València was the runner-up in Spain in both the men's and women's competitions. The tournament was held in Valladolid from 24 to 27 April. The UV boys reached the semi-finals as group leaders, ahead of the universities Rovira i Virgili, Seville and Valladolid. In the semi-final, they beat the University of Almeria 3-1, but in the final they could not beat the Catholic University of San Antonio de Murcia (UCAM), so they finished the CEU with a deserved silver medal.

The UV volleyball girls also qualified first in their group, ahead of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the universities of Castilla la Mancha and Valladolid. They advanced to the semi-final on points after a 0-0 draw against the University of Granada. In the final they lost to the UCAM, finishing runners-up at the Spanish University Championships.

In rugby, silver for the girls and bronze for the boys. The CEU took place at the “Fuente de la Mora” sports facilities in Valladolid. The UV women's rugby team made it through the group stage and arrived to the final day of matches with motivation sky-high. They beat the University of Zaragoza 0-5, then played the qualification for the finals against the University of the Basque Country and beat them 12-10. Our girls played the final against the University of Barcelona and ended up runners-up in Spain.

The UV men’s rugby team started the tournament on a winning streak, on the first day they won both matches against the universities of Malaga and the UCAM of Murcia with results of 19-0 and 26-0, respectively. The last day's competition also started in style, beating the University of Vic 24-0, but as they lost the second match against the University Camilo José Cela they could not make it to the finals. They competed for 3rd or 4th place against the University of Valladolid and won the match 31-0 taking the national bronze.

In basketball, the UV women's team was proclaimed runner-up in the Spanish University Championship. The girls reached the semi-final after qualifying as group leaders after a great first phase in which they won 3 victories in 3 games against Complutense (55-24), Castilla la Mancha (52-26) and Basque Country (38-29). In the semi-finals they beat the Technical University of Madrid (43-29). And then came the final, the UV girls played a great game against the UCAM de Murcia, they gave their all, but the scoreboard ended 86-80 in favour of the UCAM and our girls took a deserved silver medal.

The swimming championship was held in Valladolid from 30 April to 1 May. The UV team won bronze in the overall team ranking and silver with the women's team. In individual medley, Paula González won two silvers in 200m backstroke and 200m breaststroke and a bronze in 200m butterfly. Mikel Bonal won gold in 200m breaststroke, silver in 200m relays and bronze in 100m breaststroke. Carolina Pradas won a silver in 100m relays. Finally, the UV swimming team won another gold in the 4x50m mixed backstroke and a bronze in the 8x50m mixed freestyle.

The archery CEU was held in Valladolid from 30 April to 1 May. The UV won the team bronze with archers María Arranz and Elena Larrea and archer Rubén Prado. The UV team failed to qualify for the finals after losing to the University of Valladolid, but won the bronze after beating the University of Huelva. In the individual Recurve competition, Elena Larrea won the bronze medal.

Finally, the Universitat de València won a bronze medal in the badminton tournament that took place in Valladolid from 29 April to 1 May. In mixed doubles, the team formed by Lorenzo Adell and Llucia Vázquez finished the Spanish University Championships in third position.
