The UNESCO General Conference stablished the 20 of September as the International Day of University Sport (IDUS).

This moment represents a great step forward not only for the International University Sports Federation (FISU), but also for all the university sports movement, since it highlights the contribution between universities as citizenship values bearers through physical education and sport.

The objective of the announcement of an International Day of University Sport is to guarantee and preserve, for students and citizens, the activities and sports programmes in higher education institutions, in order to promote physical education and its vital contributions to health lifestyles, non discrimination, gender equality, social inclusion, integrity and a socially responsible citizenship.

From the next academic year onwards, the IDUS will be celebrated the 20 of September of every year. In many countries is the time to start the academic year, but also it is the date of the first students world championship (celebrated from the 17 to the 21 of September in Warsaw (Poland)).

The FISU will be in charge of the international coordination of the activities related to this International Day. For these reasons, guidelines will be elaborated offering an easily recognisable identity to the world, that at the same time reflect the diversity of the university and sport traditions in different regions and countries. Each university will organise at least one activity in collaboration with the authorities of the place, in order to answer better the local needs.
