Students of the Universitat de València show their highly competitive level of Volleyball, Football and Kickboxing. The remaining sports will begin their competitions next week.
The 2024 edition of the European Universities Games (EUG 2024) began last Wednesday, 10 July. It is being held in Hungary, with 91 athletes representing the Universitat de València.
Our students will be competing in 9 different sports. Already taking place are the team competitions of Volleyball and Football, as well as the individual kickboxing competition.
Volleyball
The UV competes in Volleyball in both the men’s and the women’s categories. The women’s team began the competition strong, with two well deserved victories in the group stage. On Wednesday, 10 July, the UV players left their sweat and tears on the court of their first game to defeat Warsaw’s Józef Piłsudski University of Physical Education three sets to none (27-25, 25-22, 25-22).
The second game was disputed and won three sets to one (19-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-22) this Thursday against the Politecnico di Torino.
Unluckily, fortune did not favour the men’s team. They lost three sets to one on Wednesdays against the Institute National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon and suffered yet another defeat on Thursday afternoon against Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
Football
On Thursday began competing the UV women’s football team. And they started with a bang, as they defeated the Eindhoven Institute of Technology 3-2. The first half was full of action, as the first goal was claimed by the UV with a corner at the 6th minute mark while the second goal of our team came from a counter attack at minute 23.
Shortly after the beginning of the second half, the Eindhoven team scored with a lob thanks to a counter attack however, it was of no use as the UV managed to react and score within the same minute, putting the score 3-1.
Despite the blow, Eindhoven didn’t give up and they scored yet again on minute 38. Both universities kept the pressure on until the last minute, with multiple intense plays all across the field. Nonetheless, the score stayed the same for the rest of the game, with the UV emerging as the victors 3-2.
Kickboxing
Two UV students competed on the quarterfinals of the only individual competition that has already begun, Kickboxing.
Ismael Vizcaíno Aguilar, a student of the Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, managed to advanced to the semi-finals of the up to 84 kg category due to his opponent from the Aix-Marseille University not showing up.
Damián Asins García, a student of the Degree in Primary school education, competed in the category of up to 74 kg. He started strong, with three quick points in the first round against his opponent Ali Topsakal of Ankara’s Gazi University. With them, Asins managed to advance to the semi-finals, as there weren’t any changes to the score throughout the second and third rounds despite Topsakal attempts.
