225 competitors from 57 universities faced off at the Spanish University Judo Championship in Salamanca the 12 and 13 of May.
Last week, the Miguel de Unamuno Sports Centre at the University of Salamanca hosted the top-level university judo tournament at the national level. The UV selection performed excellently and the hard work of all the team members lead them to secure the team silver, a much deserved second-place university classification in which the UV was only beat by the Complutense of Madrid. Third place was won by the University of Alicante.
In individual classification, Aitor Goicoetxa won gold in the 73 kg category. Gorka Sánches also won gold in the 66 kg category. Hugo Barcia placed third, taking home the bronze, in 90 kg. Marina Castello also made it to the podium, in third place, in 57 kg. Laura Torregrosa placed 5th in 48 kg and Gabriela Laliga 7th in the 70 kg category. Lucia Mompo, competing in the 52 kg classification, lost one of her fights and didn’t reach the play-offs.
The University of Valencia also participated last week in the Spanish University Championships of paddleball and orienteering, both organised by the University of Valladolid. Even though the UV teams didn’t make the podium, all of the athletes competed excellently.
