Avelino Croma studied Chemistry in the Universitat de València and he obtained his doctorate from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1976. After that, he incorporated to the Chemical Engineering Department of the Queen's University of Canada, and in 1979 she entered to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), becoming an investigation teacher of the CSIC in 1987. In 1990, he founded the Instituto de Tecnología Química (ITQ), a mixed investigation centre between the CSIC and the Universitat Politècnica de València, being its director until 2010. Since 2012, he is a member of the Royal Society and, among other distinctions, in 2011 he received the Grande Medaille of the Académie des sciences of France and the High Distinction of the Generalitat Valencianana to the scientific merit, and in 2014 the Princess of Asturias Awards to the Scientific and Technological Investigation. His research has focused on the creation of materials with new industrial applications, such as catalysts and sustainable catalytic processes in the field of the hydrocarbon refining and the derived of biomass.
L’Espai Ciència is an activity programme sponsored by the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, Acció del País Valencià and the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit/Chair for Scientific Dissemination of the Universitat de València, and the support of the CSIC. In this activity, Librería 3i4 and Mètode magazine collaborate.
