The University of Valencia (UV) is the third Spanish higher education academic centre with the highest number of citations of the scientific articles of its teachers and researchers, according to the institutional version of the InCites Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database, and it goes from 776,664 in the 2023 edition to 837,061 in this year’s, a 7.77% increase. By fields of knowledge, the academic institution leads the ranking in Spain in Agricultural Sciences and also in Economics and Business, and tops most subject classifications among Valencian universities. In hot articles by subject, the UV improves nine positions and reaches the 31st place in the world in Economy/Business.

ESI, from Clarivate Analytics, is a compilation of statistical information built from Web of Science data that shows emerging scientific trends, as well as authors, institutions, papers, journals, and countries that stand out in each field of research. It analyses more than 12 million articles in more than 12,315 journals over a period of 11 years. This year it analyses 9,228 institutions, for 8,557 in 2023. ESI is a tool that allows you to analyse the scientific productivity of an institution and compare the professional performance of its researchers with that of other centres.

In the institutional version of ESI, the University of Valencia is third in three more classifications: in highly cited publications (those in the 1% most cited in a research field in a specific year), with 720 papers; in hot articles (published in the last two years and which have received a very high number of citations in the last two months, 32 articles); and in impact articles (sum of hot articles and highly mentioned articles), with 721 papers.

In the version of ESI by areas of knowledge, and in the case of citations of scientific articles, in Agricultural Sciences the UV repeats the world position number 91 (1st in Spain), is second nationally in Physics, and advances seven positions in Economics and Business, so that it remains the best nationally and in the world position 195. Of the 18 subjects in which it participates in this section, the UV is the first Valencian centre in 15 of them.

Looking at subjects by number of papers published, the UV is first in Spain in Economics and Business (world position 118), second in Physics and Psychiatry/Psychology, and third in Chemistry. In these four areas, the institution is among the top 200 in the world.

In highly cited articles and impact articles, always according to subjects, the University of Valencia, in addition to occupying the 33rd world position and first in Spain in Agricultural Sciences, is also first in Spain in Geosciences and also in the field of Microbiology (rank 1-2).
