Dr. Francisco Alonso, Director of INTRAS, traveled from January 9 to 24, 2017 to the Dominican Republic, invited by the Ministry of Public Works and Communications as an expert on road safety.
Dr. Alonso has been reviewing in detail the draft of the National Road Safety Plan prepared by the Presidential Commission for Road Safety and working on the final version of it.
The Presidential Commission on Road Safety, chaired by the Minister of MOPC, Gonzalo Castillo, is in the final phase of drawing up the proposal for a National Plan for Road Safety in which the actions raise to be implemented in the period 2017- 2020 for the improvement of road safety in the country. This plan proposal will be submitted to the Executive Authority this month.
The Plan will cover everything related to traffic, from road education in schools and universities, driver training, penalty-points driving system, road infrastructure improvement, safer vehicles, strengthening of the legal framework and simplification of the system of payment of penalties as well as measures to ensure early assistance and rehabilitation of victims of traffic accidents.
This Commission was created by Decree 263-16 with the aim of seeking comprehensive solutions to the problem of traffic accidents affecting the country.
