Dr. Francisco Alonso, Director of INTRAS, participated in the "Magisterial Chair on Tourism Frank R. Rainieri", of the Universidad Central del Este (UCE), held in Punta Cana on October 30, 2023.
Dr. Alonso imparted the magisterial conference "Mobility and Road Safety in the Dominican Tourism Sector: Situation and Opportunities", on the event sponsored by the UCE, the Puntacana Group and the University of Valencia.
Alonso made a diagnosis of the mobility and road safety situation in the Dominican Republic, qualifying the mortality levels as "unacceptable", results that he attributes to the deficiency of awareness and education of citizens. Also, to the deficiency in data to elaborate effective policies, preventing a correct evaluation of the measures and countermeasures that are put in place.
He proposed implementing a "Tourist Transportation Plan" that includes all aspects of mobility, land transportation, transit and road safety, with special attention to urban development and the various infrastructures needed.
Regarding Punta Cana, he said that it is necessary to intervene with some urgency and greater efficiency to improve the quality of life of tourists, workers and citizens in general, allowing a sustainable development and guaranteeing this important source of income for the present and the future.
The Magisterial Chair on Tourism Frank R. Rainieri is an opportunity to strengthen the commitment to safe mobility in the country and promote a more reliable and prosperous tourism sector.
