Prof. Cervantes

UV is once again the host of the International Course ESMO-ESO related to oncology aimed at medical students. The course will take place at the Faculty of Medicine and Odontology (Blasco Ibañez Campus) from 15 until 19 of July. The person in charge of the course is the oncologist and UV professor, Andrés Cervantes, along with professors Nicholas Pavlidis and Susana Banerjee.

The three experts will welcome the students and will introduce the contents of the course in an introductory speech at 9 a.m. on Friday the 15th.  Later, at 9:30 a.m., there will be an opening lecture called ‘A practical approach to cancer diagnosis, staging, prognosis and therapy’  which last year was given by professor Cervantes and which this year will be given by the Italian Fortunato Ciardiello. Cervantes will focus, among other factors, in the evolution of the professionalisation and research on cancer as an independent speciality within Medicine.

In this way, the scientific community specialised in cancer study and research will gather in Europe, where 58% of all researches can be found. In Asia there is 21%, in USA  9%, and 6% in South America and Africa.  In a decade, this scientific comunity´s number has grown by 7.000 members, which currently makes a total of more than 10.000 members.

As professor Cervantes pointed out, education´s role is fundamental in the field of Oncology since specific or specialised training is increasingly more important and the relationship during this period between professionals and students should be encouraged.

On Sunday, 17.07, at 9 am, Andrés Cervantes will participate in a round table discussion which will open the day´s events and during which successfully planning careful oncological care will be discussed.  He will be accompanied by Fortunato Ciardiello, Susana Banerjee, Rafal Dziadziuszko and Fedro Peccatori.

On Monday, 18.07, professor Cervantes will give a lecture about diagnosis and treatment of rectal cancer and will analyze various clinical cases, and at the end will direct an interactive “workshop” along with the Italian expert Erika Martinelli.

The course´s main objective is to transmit to the student body the basic principles of oncology such as diagnosis and treatment in the first types of tumors, as well as to implement Oncology in multidisciplinary studies and to highlight the imporance of molecular definition of tumors in the context of modern, high-precision medicine.

The course is directed toward 4th and 5th year students of Medicine who are interested in this field and wish to examine it closely before choosing their specialization. The course describes itself, then, as a high-level, condensed educative programme for Medicine students who wish to help cancer patients.  There will be lectures related to different types of cancer: testicular, ovarian, renal, prostate, breast, menaloma. Ther will also be lectures about success stories in oncological treatment, oncological research, maternity in cancer patients, and more.

The closing of the course will be led by Andrés Cervantes, on Tuesday 19.07. The event will take place in Aula Magna at 9.45 am, and will include statements by Nicholas Pavlidis and Rolf A. Stahel. Apart from this, there will be a prize for the best student.
