Adrián Todolí, professor of Labour Law at the Universitat de València (UV), took part in the ILERA 2022 European Congress that was held at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, to focus on the use of algorithms and artificial intelligence in work management.

“Algorithms are the latest step in the automation of Human Resources Management,
from hiring to dismissing employees”, said Todolí, who shared a paper with Lucía Velasco and Ricardo Rodríguez Contreras.

Both Todolí and Velasco emphasised that the risk of artificial intelligence goes beyond the destruction of employment, as it is also about how the jobs that are left will be transformed.

Despite this, the UV professor declared himself ‘techno-optimistic’. “The problem is not technology itself, but regulation is needed if we want to avoid bad results”, he said in Barcelona, where he also explained ways to prevent these occupational risks.

Todolí recently presented a study, published in the international journal ‘Economía y Derecho Transfer’, which analyses this problem. Among them, constant monitoring and feeling observed, work intensification resulting from decisions taken by software, discrimination despite the mantle of algorithmic neutrality or their potential operating errors.
