4TH SESSION EMPLOYABILITY COURSE: CONTRIBUTING TO THE CONTINUITY AND COMPETITIVENESS OF FAMILY BUSINESSES

On 27 April, the Chair of Family Business (CEFUV) promoted by the Valencian Association of Entrepreneurs (AVE), the School of Entrepreneurs (EDEM), the Valencian Institute for the Study of Family Business (IVEFA), the Institute of Family Business (IEF) and the University of Valencia (UV), and sponsored by CaixaBank and Broseta, held the fourth session "Contributing to the continuity and competitiveness of family businesses" of the course on Employability and Professional Development in Family Businesses.

This fourth session was divided into two parts, the first "The role of employees in the management of emotions and transmission of values in the family business" given by the FIBAC consultant María Beltrán from 10:00 to 11:30h; and the second part "Development of talent" given by the professor of the Faculty of Psychology Pilar González from 12:00 to 13:30h.

 

Class 27 April 10:00

Professor María Beltrán from FIBAC, started the talk with a small feedback with the students asking them about family businesses and seeing how many of the students belonged to one of them and in which generation they were. Maria then told her personal experience in her family business, in which she was for many years, and showed the students the mistakes her family made which led them to bankruptcy and the closure of their company.

However, Maria continued the session by saying that this is one of the reasons that led her to her current job, in which she is in charge of helping family businesses not to make the same mistakes that she and her family made, and in this way, manage to move forward. Continuing with the session, Professor María Beltrán emphasised the most common mistakes made by family businesses that disappear, stressing that the transfer of generation:

"When money and heart come together it is more difficult to make decisions" - María Beltrán.

Finally, she also commented on the importance of values in the family business and the importance of defining them from the beginning. As she explained, the business generates different circumstances, positions and expectations for each member of the family and it is important to overcome adversities together and to keep the family united.

 

Class 13 April 12:00

Psychology teacher Pilar Gonzalez opened the mentoring session by showing the students her personal project EAS, showing them her website and how it works. On the website, the teacher invited the students to fill in the questionnaire that can be found on the website, which at the end of the questionnaire indicates what your skills are and their associated level.

The teacher wanted to show the students the steps to design a career project (EAS Project):

Step 1: Knowing the competence prototype, the most relevant competences for the family business.
Step 2: Analysis of the family business with your competences
Step 3: Degree of fit / mismatch
 

On the 4th of May we will have the presence of Tomás Guillén (IDEFES), and Pilar González, lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology. This will be the last session of the course!
