The Chair for Feminist Economics has published the second edition of the Report on gender gaps in the Valencian Community: job market and reproductive and care work 2007-2020.
In this report, the authors Alba Catalán and Carmen Castro show that the unequal distribution of responsibilities, roles, and productive and reproductive tasks creates unequalities and gender gaps in different fields. The gaps that can be seen in the job market have its counterpart in the unequal distribution of reproductive and care work, they are two sides of te same coin.
The aim of this report is to show some of the most meaningful aspects that can be observed in the Valencian Community (CV), to quantify the gender gaps, analyse, as far as possible, its evolution during the examined period of time, and to provide an explanation from the perspective of feminist economy.
The report is divided in three main sections. In the first one, the different patterns of participation and presence in the job market of women and men in the Valencian Community from 2007 to 2020, as well as a more recent balance sheet of the job market that includes the impact of the COVID-19 crisis (2019T1-2021T2). The second section focuses on the unequal pay due to gender with the last data published in June 2021, that refer to 2019. It also shows conditionants and factors, such as the occupational segregation, that has an influence on this gap. Lastly, the third section tackles the existence and persistence of the care work gap, also worsened during the health crisis.
