Rubrics are elements in order to evaluate student progress using different criteria. These criteria are determined by the teaching staff based on the curriculum of the subject taught.
- Assessment criteria: these will depend on the subject and the aspects to be assessed. They will be adapted to the criteria established in the teaching guide for the subject. In a language subject, for example, it will depend on the kind of text is beeing assessed: an oral or written text and also on the type of text.
- Performance scale:
- here grades can be added as required (Excellent, Merit, ...)
- different learning scales (Achieved, In progress, Needs improvement...).
The purpose of these scales will be:
- task weighting.
- learning improvement, since the students see the aspects that are evaluated even before the task is developed.
- materials adaptation and learning mechanisms.
- help learners identify what they have done well or where they need to improve.
These scales may have a numerical mark which will vary according to the weight to be given to each criterion.
In conclusion, rubrics allow a more objective and transparent assessment for both teachers and students and facilitate the identification of difficulties. Thanks to these rubrics it is possible to develop proposals and mechanisms for improvement in a simple and visual way.
In the UV Virtual Classroom (Moodle) there is the possibility of developing specific rubrics for each task. Here you can find information for its elaboration.
