The deadline for the call for papers for the international congress ‘Reimagining the Spanish-speaking world? Perspectives of German-speaking women writers’ has been extended until 6 June 2024.

The international congress ‘Reimagining the Spanish-speaking world? Perspectives of German-speaking women writers’ will be held at the Faculty of Language Studies, Translation and Communication of the Universitat de València between 15 and 17 January 2025. within the research project ‘Imagological construction of Spain in the German-speaking women’s odeporic: systematisation from a gender perspective’ (CIAICO 2022/105), funded by the Valencian Department of Education, Universities and Employment (Generalitat Valenciana), the UV Permanent Research Group on Intercultural Relations Germany–Spain (RIALE) extends an invitation to submit proposals for the international congress ‘Reimagining the Spanish-speaking world? Perspectives of German-speaking women writers’, to be held at the Faculty of Language Studies, Translation and Communication between 15 and 17 January 2025.

Those interested in participating may send their submissions in German or Spanish to rialeuv@uv.es before 6 June 2024.

The objective of this congress is to reflect on the Hispanic imagological configurations in texts written by German-speaking women authors, with a particular focus on travel narratives, whether factual or fictional, but without excluding other literary works.

The following questions will be addressed, among others:

  • What Hispanic imagotypes and stereotypes are displayed by texts?
  • To what extent do these texts have thematic and formal characteristics of a specifically feminine aesthetic?
  • To what extent is the Hispanic image conditioned by traditionally masculine visions?
  • Is there a (different) representation of femininity in these texts?

This congress aims not only to contribute to a better understanding of intercultural and transcultural German–Spanish relations in Europe, but also to recognise women writers and travellers as intellectual and social pioneers who have contributed enormously to the empowerment of women.
