The director of the team of the Chair of New Green Transition at the Universitat de València, Aurora Pedro, has prepared a report on the tourist tax.

The tourist tax is the tax paid by the tourist per night of stay in the territory in question, from which children or minors under a certain age are exempt in most cases. Generally, the tax varies depending on the type of establishment, as staying in a hostel is not the same as staying in a five-star hotel. An amount is collected from this tax which is used for measures to preserve, develop and promote tourist infrastructures and activities.

This system has already been implemented in most European countries with the aim of raising specific funds to improve tourist, natural or cultural conditions, among others. In general, the fee has been accepted, and no negative impact has been found.

In Spain, only Catalonia and the Balearic Islands have implemented it, and in the rest of the regions there are proposals for its implementation. This is the case of the Valencian Community, where the Proposition of Law for the creation of the Valencian Tax on Tourist Stays (IVET) has been presented.
