Professor Cerezo Herrero presents an innovative book and gives a workshop in Graz on teaching methodology, language competence and oral interpreting skills.

On 5 and 6 March, Professor Enrique Cerezo Herrero presented his new book, The Routledge Guide to Teaching Foreign Languages for Translation and Interpreting, and delivered a workshop for the teaching staff of the Department of Translation and Interpreting at the University of Graz (Austria).

The book addresses an essential, though partly forgotten, topic within translation studies: the acquisition of linguistic competence. It brings together the most cutting-edge research in this field and presents itself as a methodological guide to help foreign language teachers design their classes, taking into account the linguistic and cognitive demands specific to translation and interpreting.

For its part, the workshop focused on didactic models for curriculum design and on the development of the oral skill applied to interpreting. Special emphasis was placed on the need to design activities that take into account the active nature of this skill in the context of conference interpreting, as well as on fostering cognitive skills linked to auditory comprehension, such as divided attention, memory and note-taking.

The workshop concluded with an activity called The Web of Life, in which participants, in a playful manner, connected the main topics covered during the session, thus helping to give this communicative skill its own identity in its application to interpreting.
