Inivitation to the presentation
Presentation "Historias de las «terceras Españas» (1933-2022)"

On Thursday, 2 November, in the Muralla Hall of the Rector Peset Hall of Residence, there will be a presentation on the book Historias de las "terceras Españas" (1933-2022) by Alfonso Botti.

"Tercera España" or "Third Spain" is a concept that came about in the thirties. However, with the Spanish Civil War and the Franco regime, it lost stigma and was almost forgotten. The phrase timidly resurfaced in Republican exile and, suprisingly, not during the transition to democracy, but rather from the eighties on. Since then, the concept has been disputed now and again without ever really defining its perametres or constitution. The range of perspectives is wide - some deny its existence or confine it to a small group of pro-mediation intellectuals during the Civil War, while others identify it with the majority of Spaniards during that conflict or see it represented in post-Franco Spain. Without sharing the obsolete scheme of the "two Spains", this book traces and reconstructs for the first time the cultural, political and ideological debate around the "third Spain": its political uses, the polemics and the reasons for its oblivion in specific moments of the most recent Spanish history. It shows not only the outline of the different "third Spains" in public, journalistic and academic debate, but also a different perspective through which to read the current debate on some of the most controversial and "hot" issues of contemporary Spanish history.
