I have a PhD in Environmental Politics (Keele University). In 2006 a European Union Marie Curie Early Career Fellowship brought me to the UK, to Keele University's Research Institute for Law, Politics and Justice, where I began my studies in green political thought. At Keele, I completed my PhD in 2011 with a thesis entitled "Promoting eoclogical citizenship: the state, civil society and the green public sphere", supervised by Andrew Dobson. Then I was a postdoctoral researcher at the Inter-University Institute for Local Development (Valencia). Afterwards, I worked in The Netherlands, where I taught in the MA in Philosophy at Radboud University Nijmegen, and in South Corea, as assistant professor in the Dual Master's Degree from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and the United Nations University for Peace. In 2015 I moved back to Valencia to join the Geography Department, where I am currently a Senior Lecturer. I have been a visiting research fellow at the Instituto de Investigaciones en Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales, Universidad Nacional de La Plata (Argentina), the School of Management, Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands), the Faculty of Chemistry, Biology and Geography, West University of Timisoara (Romania) and at the School of Social, Political and Global Studies, Keele University (UK). My teaching and research interests focus on the intersection between green politics and human geography. My recent research deals with environmental conflicts; the nexus between citizenship, the environment and place; policies and social practices with an impact on the agro-food system of l'Horta (the peri-urban agricultural land in the metropolitan area of Valencia); the impacts of climate change in rural Spain; and the causes and effects of the October 2024 Cold Drop (DANA) in Valencia from a critical and political ecology perspective. I am a member of the research-action group Recartografias and of the Inter-University Institute for Local Development A selection of my publications can be found at: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Carme_Melo |
