Castles mark the landscape of the Península Ibérica. They are part of our most valuable heritage and an increasing source of interest among citizens.

However, it is true that many of them are in a terrible conservation status. There are different and complex causes of this situation and it is convenient to analyse them so as to contain this global issue that affects the whole national territory.

The Comunidad Valenciana is not an exception. Valencian lands are among the most mountainous of the Península Ibérica, what entails the presence of several fortifications built for controlling the entrances, paths, territories and populations and their harvests.

In this way, Valencian lands have a wide variety of castles and fortifications types, source and consequence of the different historical stages and past events. A heritage that, without doubt, has to be protected, preserved and disseminated.

This Seasonal University of Cullera, in its third edition, aims to go deeper in this problematic, in the future of these fortifications, planning intervention models and proposing actions that ensure, not only the survival of this fortified heritage, but also its enjoyment by citizens and tourists, covering both questions: the conservation with its use and the sustainable and rational enjoyment.
