Internships in Institutions

From its beginning in 1996, the University of Valencia internships at companies for the studies of Art History has taken part in this always enriching and many times voluntary process. Our department has early acknowledged the importance of the internships at the public and private sector for many reasons. Most of all, for the additional education that our alumni could receive but also for the possibilities that arise from the contact with a broad social and labour reality that allows the definition and defence of professional starts in our working area.

Since 2000/2001 the training internships at institutions have been integrated in the study plan as optional subjects from the second part of the studies with 10 credits that correspond to 150 hours or the student could continue on a voluntary basis doing this experience or combining it with others until a maximum of 640 hours for an academic course. Recently the subject could also be followed by students from the MA studies in Cultural Heritage at the faculty of Geography and History and in the future it would be also be offered to students doing their research Master in Art History and Visual Culture at the Department of Art History.

The qualification is obtained through a report signed by the tutor in the company and a paper that the student submits to the professor responsible for the subjects. More than 250 places in about 50 companies are offered for each academic course which allows the places that remain free to be offered as voluntary internships.

The internships have undergone numerous alterations but the initial objective has remained, which is to complete the university education of the student in a socio-professional environment. The fields and main activities in which the internships take place although with various transfers among each others are as follows:

-Management of Cultural Heritage and the Art market: Museums, libraries, foundations, art galleries, centres for montage of exhibitions and international transportation of art works, music centres, centres for cinema…
-Conservation of cultural heritage: Centres for conservation and restoration, cataloguing of cultural heritage …
-Diffusion of cultural heritage: museum didactic workshops, heritage routes, travel agencies, cultural information centres, application of new technologies in the cultural diffusion…
Didactic: teaching centres, centres for information and didactic documentation such as CEFIREs…
-Initial research and art critics: Collaboration in I+D projects, leading plans, associations…

In order to improve the quality of the internships, they have been subject to a process of auto evaluation from the part of an internal committee formed by professors, students, personnel from GADE and ADEIT and company tutors and evaluated by an external committee too that offered as a result a Final Report that could be consulted in the following links.

Internships at Institutions 2010-2011: Applications from 1 of July till 3 of September at the Virtual Secretary

The pre-registration from 1 of July till 3 of September serves on one hand to be known the number of places required and be able to settle the offer and demand (this subject offers more than twice as much places as students enrolled that is why most of them could do the internship of their first or second choice); on the other hand our administration can have the data of the students on time in order to draw up the internship agreements so that to start it in the most agile way.
Registration is made with the rest of the subjects
The internship offer is published in September. It is announced by e-mail and posters in the halls of the second part of studies as well as the date and place of the informative meetings to offer the exact information about the internship centres, timetables, etc. At the end the internships are selected.
