Professor Stanley L. Miller (1930-2007), one of the most renowned scientists in the study of the origin of life, published his famous Science magazine article 70 years ago on 15 May 1953, in which he published the first synthesis of organic compounds under conditions similar to those of the early Earth's atmosphere.
In 2003, on the occasion of his 50th birthday, the University of Valencia organised an academic tribute to professor Miller at the Botanic Garten, in recognition of his work as an initiator of prebiotic chemistry, a scientific approach to the study of the origin of life to which Miller devoted his entire life. Furthermore, the first lecture of the Peregrí Casanova Memorial was given by Santley Miller. Casanova was a professor of the University of Valencia between the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was one of the defenders of the Charles Darwin’s theories. He joined the tribute paid to the English naturalist organised by students of the academic institution in 1909.
Miller published in Science his first experiments on prebiotic simulation, inspired by the ideas of Aleksandr I. Oparin and led by Nobel Prize-winning chemist Harold C. Urey.
