Summary:
Joao Valente holds a Biology degree from the University of Porto and a PhD in Neuroscience from Imperial College London, where he studied the cannabinoid system in pain. In 2014 he joined King’s College London to investigate arthritic pain, focusing on vascularisation and inflammation. Since 2022, Joao has been a Senior Editor at Communications Biology, overseeing Neuroscience, Physiology, and Metabolism. He also teaches postgraduate neuroscience courses at King’s.
This seminar offers a behind-the-scenes look at the role of full-time editors and the editorial decision-making process. Topics include manuscript handling, peer review, and how editors select reviewers and assess their feedback. We’ll discuss reasons for rejection, both before and after review, and how to navigate revisions effectively. You’ll learn how to craft a compelling cover letter, respond to reviewer comments with clarity, and avoid common pitfalls. We’ll also cover when and how to appeal decisions. Throughout, Joao will highlight how thoughtful communication with editors can improve outcomes and streamline the publication journey.
