The confocal detection system consists of four PMTs, two of which are high sensitivity GaAsP detectors. In addition, the new ZEISS LSM 980 confocal microscope is equipped with an Airyscan detector and the Elyra 7 structured illumination system (SIM). The Airyscan through the combined use of 32 GaAsP detectors enables a 4 to 8-fold improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio of the image, as well as a 1.7-fold improvement of the image resolution in all three spatial dimensions. On the other hand, the Elyra 7 system, using structured illumination techniques, can resolve structures of less than 60 nm with a capture speed that can reach 255 images per second. This makes it ideal for high-resolution dynamic imaging of living cells.
- Colocalisation studies of fluorescent probes.
- Three-dimensional characterisation of biological structures and materials.
- Live cell studies.
