On 22 and 23 February, the Second Virology Congress of the Universitat de València (UV) will take place, one of the few events in Spain dedicated exclusively to the fascinating world of virology. Distinguished speakers who are leaders in both dissemination and research in this field will be taking part. Among them, we highlight Luis Enjuanes, recognised for his important contribution to the development of vaccines against the coronavirus. Join us for a unique experience!

Organised by the students of the Master’s Degree in Virology of the Universitat de València, the congress will be held at the Burjassot Campus for the second consecutive year. It is aimed at students, researchers, and health professionals interested in various aspects of virology.

The event will address highly relevant topics, such as the development of vaccines against emerging viruses, scientific dissemination in virology, research with animal viruses with high zoonotic potential, basic virology with prokaryotic viruses, and the use of bacteriophages as a therapeutic tool. Different professional opportunities in the field of virology will also be explored.

“This is a congress organised entirely by the students as a part of one of the subjects of the master’s programme. This training approach is very innovative as it allows them to address aspects of scientific dissemination and popularisation from a practical point of view while at the same time contributing to highlighting the importance of virology in medical studies and the life sciences", emphasise the directors of the master's degree, Salvador Herrero, and Rafael Sanjuán.

The speakers participating in this second congress are “prestigious personalities, both in the area of dissemination and in research of virology at national level”, explain the co-directors of the master’s degree. A total of 13 experts from various universities, research institutes, and innovative companies from different fields of virology and from different cities of Spain will share their studies through nine lectures and a round table.

First Day: Thursday, 22 February

Get ready for a day full of learning in the Sala Charles Darwin in the Aulari Interfacultatiu at the Burjassot Campus! The event will start with an inaugural conference led by Luis Enjuanes, renowned director of the Coronavirus Laboratory of the National Centre for Biotechnology-CSIC and distinguished member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences.

Carlos Pedrós-Alió, co-director of the Microbiome Analysis Laboratory and Research Professor at the National Biotechnology Centre-CSIC, will surprise us with his lecture entitled “Well, what's the point of this?” Do not miss it!

The outstanding UV professor Pilar Domingo, director of the Environmental and Biomedical Virology group at I2SysBio, will reveal the secrets of phage therapy as a weapon against multi-resistant bacteria.

Lucía Almagro, renowned biotechnologist and science communicator, better known as @diariodeunacientifica on social media, will dazzle you with her lecture on Making the invisible enemy visible: when knowledge is power.

Rodrigo Sánchez from the University of Alacant will delve into pseudolysogeny as an alternative cycle of infection.

Do not miss Archaea viruses by Fernando Santos from the University of Alacant, and find out more about Respiratory viruses under examination: family portrait and diagnosis by Raúl Ortiz from the University of Valladolid.

In addition, Isabel Simarro from the Complutense University of Madrid will share her research on Viral diseases of veterinary relevance, while José Antonio López from the Autonomous University of Madrid will immerse you in Infections and pathologies studied from the perspective of university neurobiology.

Second Day: Friday, 23 February

The congress will continue in the Assembly Hall “Eduard Boscà” Science Library, so do not miss it! The students of the master's degree in Virology of the UV, Irati Bastero, Pedro Alba, Guillermo Gosálbez, and Ana Hernanz will present reports of great interest.

And to close with a final flourish, do not miss the round table with the participation of distinguished experts such as Lucas Mora (UV), Jérémy  Dufloo (UV), Gloria Sánchez (IATA-CSIC), and Marisa Domingo-Calap (Evolving Therapeutics).  We look forward to seeing you there!

Discover the unique Opportunity in Spain to study Virology

The Burjassot Campus of the Universitat de València is home to one of the two university master's degrees in Virology in Spain. Since its launch in the 2022/2023 academic year, this programme has been dedicated to offering specialised training in the fascinating field of viruses.

The curriculum takes a comprehensive and integrative approach, exploring the diverse implications of viruses in human, animal and plant health. In addition, key aspects such as the biology, evolution, and biotechnological applications of viruses are explored in depth. Emphasising its practical and experimental character, more than 50% of the teaching is focused on hands-on activities. This includes a wide range of options to carry out the Master’s Degree Final Project in prestigious research centres, hospitals, or biotech companies.

For the next academic year 2024-2025, 32 places are available for new students. Secure your place by pre-registration before 14 June at 14:00! If you are interested in Virology, this is your chance to acquire the specialised skills that will prepare you for an increasingly competitive and demanding job market. Do not miss this unique opportunity!
