Third Edition of the European University Championship of Judo at Reims (France)

The judo team is going to Reims (France) to compete in the third edition of the European University Championship that will be held from 7 to 11 October. The team coached by Vicente Rochela participate in this event after a great season, having reached the first position in the Regional University Sports Championship (CADU), winning 6 golds, 7 silvers and 5 bronzes. Moreover, the team participates in this event after competing in the last European championship, Coimbra’13, where they won three bronzes thanks to Javier Selma, Iokin Sagarzazu and Isabel Tomás.

The team is comprised by Carlos Gil (66kg), Ángeles López (63kg), Daniel Pérez (66kg), Ana Pérez (52kg), Neus Pou (57kg) and Iokin Sagarzazu (-60kg) who will compete in more than twenty universities in several categories according to the weight.

According to Vicente Rochela, coach of the judo team, “it is a top level tournament. France is a major power in judo and is very close to other countries with a high level as Germany, the Netherlands and Russia, so there will be a large number of athletes with a very high level. Our team has a good level of competition, as all judokas reached the first places in the podium. Perhaps Iokin has more options than the rest because of his experience, since he won a bronze in the previous European University Championship. The team’s expectations are positive, because all members are trained for reaching a spot on the podium”.

Valero Blasco, coach and member of the Physical Education and Sports Service, has the same opinion as Rochela “it is a top level championship. Judo is one of the national sports in France, and there will also be a great German, Dutch and Spanish participation, countries where judo is steeped in tradition and whose universities will present athletes with a very high level. We are going to do our best, but we know that we will find a full pavilion and a very high level of competition”.

As in previous university sporting events, the Physical Education and Sports Service will cover the events live and follow up the teams throughout its website (www.uv.es/sef) official social networks (Twitter: @sefuv and www.facebook.com/SEFUV) in which it will inform all its followers on the results of each and every encounter.
