Adela Cortina, National Essay Prize 2015 and author of Aporophobia, reflects in her new book on the ethical challenges surrounding AI and alerts us to its dangers for democracy. The Artificial Intelligence was born full of promises and threats, arousing enthusiasm and suspicion. Both enthusiasts and fearful ask for it to be given ethics to defend and empower humanity and nature; some even assure that we will be able to end sickness, death and create a superior species to welcome a peaceful and happy world. Before this optimistic perspective, some questions arise. Are we talking about ethics or ideology? Are they pulling the wool over our eyes, making seem science something that is not to attract investments or win in the race for global power? And all this while strategic reason triumphs in the public space and communicative reason is eclipsed. This is terrible news if we want to strengthen democracy, which is in danger globally. And, of course, in Spain, Europe and Latin America. With her usual clarity for stating ideas and points, Adela Cortina, with her book, addresses key aspects of the debate surrounding AI: the ethical duty of the techno sciences, the geostrategy of power, the challenges of robotics, the freedom of the digital era and the control of the public space that the algorithms and technologies exert.
