“Collective Identity/Metanarrative” is an expositive proposal of the INCREABLES artistic collective for the  II Festival de les Arts Ciutat Vella Oberta 2015. A multidisciplinary festival in the Ciutat Vella district of Valencia that connects associations, institutions and business that share the mentioned urban district.

Since its creation in the year 2003 the INCREABLES collective has defended the role of art as a vehicle of communication and citizenship awareness. The concern on recycling and on the environmental awareness is one of the fundamental pillars of this collective characterised by giving new meanings to disused products.

The installation “COLLECTIVE IDENTITY/ Metanarrative” for  Ciutat Vella  Oberta_CVO addresses the approaching to universal concepts from the metaphorical vision on a same starting object: a chest of drawers. A domestic furniture that catches equally in its drawers and locks our identity and our secrets. The chest of drawers as an object –subject, centre of order, and protector of chaos. This so “familiar” furniture has kept safe everything put in its hands, everything that wanted to be ordered or maybe hidden, sinking in the same silence the traces of coexistence and of desire.

The artistic proposal has seven wooden chest of drawers on loan from La maleta de Victoria, and have been given new meanings by the participant artists:

• The chest of drawers as a silent metaphor of “Individuality” that approaches us to existential aspects of their owners.
• The chest of drawers as “Liberation”; the drawers of the furniture keep emotions, memories, sentiments, passions, secrets... and when all of that blossoms it raises life from the inside of the chest of drawers, as a seed planted in the darkness of our brain extending to all our being, transcending and breaking all kinds of barriers and limitations.
• The chest of drawers as “Viewer” that satisfies our Voyeur desire.
• The chest of drawers as “Fear”; nightmares take shape, settle, box up and hide.
• The chest of drawers as “Privacy”; locks and drawers represent our intimate life, the impenetrable reserve of the reveries.
• The chest of drawers as “Object-Subject”, as centre of order, and protector of chaos.
In any way, this so “familiar” furniture has kept safe everything put in its hands, everything that wanted to be ordered or maybe hidden, sinking in the same silence the traces of coexistence and of desire. A story that goes over history, a set of visual poems that are able of transmitting other universal concepts.

The philosopher Henri Bergson (1859-1941) identifies the concepts with drawers that serve to classify the knowledge; the concepts are “made suits” that generalise the lived knowledge. Bergson, therefore, analyses the term ‘drawer’ from an apocalyptic or restrictive vision from which the authors of this projects run away; the drawer as file. Nevertheless, reversely to the drawer concept of Bergson, for Henri Bosco (1859-1941) “the drawer is the foundation of the human spirit.”

Individually, thirteen artists develop an intervention on a same starting object. The spectator could also know the story, sinking in a world of emotions, not only through the carried out works, but by observing from the inside those common places where we hide and keep the memories of what we were and are no more. It will also have a reverie atmosphere generated thanks to the presence of ethereal elements that will make us to introduce ourselves in a journey of emotions where hearing, touching, and feeling will be the general tonic.
