THE COLLEGE OF PSYCHOLOGY, 30 YEARS. 1983 – 2013.

Over its thirty-year existence, the College of Psychology has gone from being a branch of the College of Philosophy and Education Science to moving to the Health area. Its scientific and experimental nature has been firmly acknowledged, and speech therapy has gained momentum. This evolution is characterized by the ongoing and active search for quality and excellence in both education and research, and by the strong commitment to social needs.

The development of scientific psychology in Valencia started in the 1960s, when Professor José Luis Pinillos took on the newly created Psychology Professorship. About a decade later (1973), psychology studies started being delivered. The College of Psychology was set up in 1983, though it was not until 1994 that specific curricula were approved. Shortly after, in 1997, the Speech Therapy diploma, taught at the College, was offered to students. The implementation of the Bologna Process began in 2009; the first students of Psychology and Speech Therapy undergraduate studies graduated in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

The expansion of scientific and academic psychology has been paralleled by the strong development of the professional practice. Early initiatives had already been taken by the School leading to an internship program –voluntary at first but compulsory later– and to the subsequent development of a major practicum that completes laboratory work in collage. Exchanges with other universities (Erasmus, Sicue-Seneca and other international schemes) promote a more universal education, more and more needed by today’s students and practitioners.

This educational objective is completed by the research activities conducted by lecturers together with external professionals and visiting professors in the masters and PhD programmes, some of them of a high international profile. The activity and good work of both lecturers and researchers as well as that of the clerical staff ensures a wide range of studies and research that has helped the School reach the top three positions in national ranks and, together with the UB, be among the top 50 in Europe.
