The exhibition ‘Mujeres del Congo. El camino hacia la esperanza’ (Spanish for Women of Congo: Road to Hope), by the photographer Isabel Muñoz, National Prize 2016, and the Congolese journalist Caddy Adzuba, Princess of Asturias Award for Concord 2014, arrives at La Nau Cultural Centre on 1 October thanks to the agreement recently signed by the General Foundation of the Universitat de València and the Mainel Foundation, in collaboration with Casa África.

This is an exhibition project that the Mainel Foundation wanted to recover on its thirtieth anniversary, after it was exhibited in 2015 at the headquarters of the French Institute in Kinshasa with the support of the Spanish Embassy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This exhibition is a testimony to the context in which the Mainel Foundation deploys its development cooperation projects within the Central African country, considered by the United Nations to be one of the worst places in the world to be born a woman.

Thus, Isabel Muñoz captures with her photograph the dignity of women survivors of sexual violence, suffered especially in the eastern part of the Congolese republic. These are images that relate the stories of brave and finally liberated women, with the aim of serving as an example of the fight against abuse.

‘Mujeres del Congo. El camino hacia la esperanza’ is a cultural project that is part of the ‘Trobades amb la col·lecció’ line of work of the Martínez Guerricabeitia Collection of the Universitat de València, aimed to artists who are represented in it or who could be, as in the case of the photographer Isabel Muñoz.

The organisation of the exhibition, signed by the Vice-Principal Antonio Ariño, as executive vice-president of the General Foundation of the Universitat de València, and by the president of the Mainel Foundation, Vicente Emilio López Castell, also includes the participation of La Nau Cultural Centre and the Martínez Guerricabeitia Collection; the production of Casa África; and the collaboration of Heineken Spain and Coca-Cola.

‘Mujeres del Congo. El camino hacia la esperanza’ exhibition will remain at the Martínez Guerricabeitia Exhibition Room in La Nau from 1st October 2020 to 10th January 2021, if the current pandemic situation allows it.
