El muerto es otro

Cloister of La Nau with the gravel tombs

Installation of the winning project Activa Cultura. Centre Cultural La Nau

El muerto es otro
(Award winner at ACTIVA CULTURA 2021)

The Cloister of the Cultural Centre La Nau of the Universitat de València hosts the installation “El muerto es Otro”, one of the winning projects of the “Activa Cultura” call.

Conceived by the multidisciplinary artist Pedro Ruiz Roldán, the facility consists of a hundred anonymous and homogeneous tombs, made of sober and solemn black gravel, which aims to shock the public in the face of death.

Inspired in the Albacetian alfombrismo (creation of sawdust carpets, composed by one or more layers of colored sawdust laid on the ground as decoration) of Elche de la Sierra, his homeland, where carpets are ephemeral offerings of a religious nature, the installation at La Nau has been a metaphor for the life-death process due to its finiteness.

The deaths in the Mediterranean, the constant murders of women at the hands of their husbands or the aggressions against people from the LGTBIQ+ collective, or COVID, are intended to be made visible and claimed through this installation
