Els mons fantàstics de Rafa Fonteriz, Jaime Brocal Remohí i Núria Tamarit

Programming X Jornades del Còmic de València [+]

The exhibition “Fantasy Made in VLC“ shows the immense tradition of fantasy comics made in Valencia via the work of three fundamental genre-specific artists: Rafa Fonteriz, Jaime Brocal Remohí and Núria Tamarit. Three generations in which the fantasy genre was always brilliantly and formally approached from three very different perspectives, both industrial and authorial.

Jaime Brocal Remohí
(Valencia, 1936-2002)

He started in the 50s, in child humour and romantic comics, but he soon after passed onto collections of realist-style short stories such as Comandos and Selección de Aventuras Ilustradas. In the 60s, he marks the beginning of Viking fantasy in Spain with Katan, starting a long and successful relationship with epic fantasy. With a recognisable-line naturalist style, based on a perfect definition of anatomy, he starts working for the United Kingdom in series such as Janus Stark, but he wouldn’t be recognised for his work until later, at the American publisher Warren for his renowned series “The Mummy Walks”. He then came to Spain with one of his most famous creations, “Kronan”, which, from Trinca magazine, would pass onto being the basis for another two long-lived series that would turn out to be successful in the French market: Arcane and Taar. A prolific author, he also dedicated himself to make adaptations of literature classics and even religious texts such as the Bible and the Koran. He’s always been a pioneer, as he was among the first foreign comic book artists to develop a series for Japan: Kami no Ude. A lover of the horror genre, he collaborated with Antonio Segura in making El otro Necronomicón, an homage to his great friend Alberto Breccia that came out in the 90s.

Rafa Fonteriz
(Valencia, 1961)

Comic book artist of great academic style, follower of the great classics of the American comic strip, his work became known in the 90s in publishers such as La General Ediciones, for then passing onto publishing series such as Efecto Dominó on El Víbora. During the beginning of the 90s he made several erotic series for Kiss Comix and Eros Comix magazine, and he then moved onto superhero comics with one of his most recognised creations, Iberia Inc., which opened the doors to the American and European market. He created various series for the French market, such as Le meilleur job du monde, and he currently stands out as one of the most recognised inkers in the landscape of American superhero comics. His work can be appreciated in series as famous as “Occupy Avengers” or “Captain Marvel”.
