“Reason is, and ought only to be, the slave of the passions” David Hume (1711–1776)

Baroque Passion proposes a journey through the intriguing universe of human passions through music and dance, with an interdisciplinary approach that highlights the already profound meaning of each selected work.

The musical part takes as its starting point a selection from the opera Alcina by Georg Friedrich Händel (1685–1759), with touches from some of his other instrumental works and a hint of Vivaldi’s “madness,” helping to contextualise each aria. This repertoire leads us through humiliation, lament, love, fear, audacity, desire, hope, and pain, among other passions.

And, following Händel’s own proposal, who premiered Alcina with the presence of dance, the programme seeks to emphasise the content of each section through dance, not only contemporary dance but also one of the most passionate dances in existence: the tango. A true passionate pairing across space and time
