No one is born a foreigner. The first migration, in its strictest sense, is birth. Every person is, feels, or is considered a foreigner at some point in their lives, and in the same way, each of us, at some point, perceives someone as foreign. Every person inherits and transmits culture(s): that is the foundation of the awareness of a shared humanity. In situations of emigration and immigration, many of these inherited elements take on new meaning: language and its accents, music, flavors, scents, the intensity of light, and the memory that comes from history, education, and the sociopolitical environment. By rediscovering them in ‘another place’ and sharing them with those who, until then, had been 'outsiders' —and who, in turn, offer us their own legacy—our original background is enriched, and our sense of belonging to those other places is strengthened. In that encounter, solidarity takes root: inevitable multiculturalism becomes chosen and creative and fertile intercultural exchange.
BIOGRAPHY OF PACA RIMBAU HERNÁNDEZ
Paca Rimbau arrived in Luxembourg in November 1985 to work as a freelance proofreader at the Publications Office of the European Economic Community. Once settled, she worked as a Spanish teacher (in private institutions, the Luxembourg Penitentiary Centre, and organizations for social and professional reintegration), as a translator (for the European Parliament, the European Commission, private companies, and associations), and as an interpreter (since 1993, she has been a sworn translator and interpreter). She is also a cultural manager and promoter, and a journalist in both print and radio media. From the Spanish Cultural Circle Antonio Machado in Luxembourg, of whose executive board she was a member for several years, she has promoted projects such as the Flamenco Festival Esch, ongoing since 2006. She is a member of the editorial team of the literary magazine ABRIL, founded in Luxembourg in 1991, which publishes texts by authors from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Since 2009, she has chaired the association Les amis des Brigades Internationales–Luxembourg. A recognized feminist activist and founder of CID Femmes et Genre, she received, in 2023, the Encomienda of the Order of Isabella the Catholic in recognition of her social and cultural career. Since October 2022, she has been living by the sea, in La Herradura (Granada).
