The Bacchae by Euripides

The play begins when Dionysus, in human form, arrives in the city of Thebes to punish the insolence of its king, Pentheus, who denies the god’s divine origin and forbids his rites. Despite the warnings of Cadmus and Tiresias, the young monarch captures the stranger. Dionysus appears to Pentheus and persuades him to disguise as a woman and to go watch the Bacchae (the Theban women who had fled the city possessed by the god to perform the rituals in his honour). Thus, the king leaves disguised as a woman. However, Agave, his own mother, kills him, mistaking him for a beast. When the woman realises what she has done, she suffers greatly from the horror of the act. The play ends with Cadmus and Agave leaving for exile.
