Philolaches is a young man whose business is going well. With the money he has earned, he buys a slave girl with whom he is in love and frees her. In the absence of his father, Theopropides squanders his family’s fortune and throws parties with his friends. One day, in the middle of one of these parties, his slave Tranio bursts in and warns him that his father has returned earlier than expected and may arrive from the harbour at any moment. In the midst of the confusion, Tranio devises a stratagem: he will his master Philolaches and his friends in the house and, when Theopropides arrives, he will tell him the house is haunted and everyone has left for fear of the dreadful events taking place inside.
