The programme begins with the premiere of Calix maudit, by Joan Gómez-Alemany, a dialogue between devotion to the Holy Chalice and the poetry of Rimbaud and Mallarmé, two of the poètes maudits in Verlaine’s words. The work, full of contrasts and sound effects, reflects on this chalice and what it has provoked over the course of two thousand years, also taking advantage of the fact that this year marks the third jubilee year dedicated to the Holy Chalice.
The rest of the concert offers a journey through the 20th and 21st centuries, with examples such as the Vespers by Rakhmaninov, the sacred minimalism of Tavener, Vasks and Lang, and the neo-romanticism of Barber’s Agnus Dei; perhaps some of the clearest examples of religious music, prayers and supplications that have emerged amid wars and social transformations that refuse to listen. A prayer that turns into nothingness
