Sustainability and the Terminal Crisis of Capitalism

We are entering a new era of conflict over the remaining resources, while at the same time facing an environmental disaster. Both problems are a consequence of the need for growth inherent in our economic system. Capitalism is a system in constant expansion, and it cannot be otherwise, which determines the kind of energy transition we are attempting to undertake. In this talk, we will examine the roots of our difficult situation and review the scientific evidence for the unsustainability of capitalism, as well as how we can overcome its limits and propose a truly sustainable society.
Antonio Turiel (León, 1970) is a physicist, mathematician, and PhD in Theoretical Physics. He is a research scientist at the Institute of Marine Sciences of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), where he works in the fields of physical oceanography and remote sensing. The author of more than one hundred scientific publications, he is also one of the most recognised voices in Spain on public outreach concerning energy, sustainability, and the energy transition. He has published three key books on these topics —Petrocalipsis (2020), Sin energía (2022), and El futuro de Europa (2024)— as well as other works in collaboration with other authors. Since 2008, he has maintained the blog The Oil Crash, a leading Spanish-language reference for the analysis of the energy crisis, resource availability, and the challenges of the transition towards a sustainable energy model.
