Un cuento de fantasmas para adultos

The Martínez Guerricabeitia Trust presents the exhibition Un cuento de fantasmas para adultos (A ghost story for adults) by the painter Chema López

The Martínez Guerricabeitia Trust registered at the University of Valencia General Foundation, presents, from 14 May to 7 September the exhibition Un cuento de fantasmas para adultos, by the painter Chema López , which will be exhibited at the Martínez Guerricabeitia room of La Nau.

The exhibition is a project by Ricardo Forriols and reflects, through painting, about the importance of image in the configuration of the rhetoric of power, both in an historical and propaganda level or a repressive level.

On this occasion and continuing with the line drawn in his last individual exhibition held in Valencia, Sobre heroes y tumbas (On heroes and tombs) (Galería Valle Ortí, 2010), Chema López retakes the maxim of Walter Benjamin about the absolute correlation between cultural production and barbarism: There is no document of civilization which is not at the same time a document of barbarism.

The relationship between photography and criminalisation will be the central concept of the exhibition, which is organised around two groups of works or parts intended to facilitate the assembly, viewing and distribution of pieces: A. La intemperie (In the open)and B. El hogar (Home).

Thus, the exhibition gathers the latest production of the author, presenting twenty large paintings with an extensive series of drawings that will serve as footnotes of the paintings, conducting or confusing the last meaning of these.

Connected with the paintings, the documentary entitled Angelitos negros.

Los motivos del pintor (Little black angels. The reasons of the painter), will be presented in premiere, directed by Chema López. From the biography of a deceased family member, reconstructed through the voices of those who met this person, the role of art as a hobby in dark times and circumstances is questioned.

The exhibition, which is sponsored by the Santander bank and it has the collaboration of Heineken, will be open to the public next Wednesday, 14 May, at 19:00.

Moreover, the exhibition will be complemented with a series of educational activities and guided tours.
