The focus on coexistence and the respect for diversity in the field of education reflect a formative and transformative approach that has long been emphasised by pedagogy to promote social progress. The pedagogy of coexistence is a complex and substantial challenge that has progressively advanced in education for learning to live together. Now, it is important to continue this progress.
The exhibition aims to showcase some of the most representative signs of the pedagogy of coexistence throughout the history of education, particularly in Spain. The exhibition explores the evolution of this topic’s significance in Spanish society through a selection of publications and pedagogical materials. It addresses ongoing issues and new challenges in the face of discourses of hatred that have overlooked the EU’s challenge ‘In varietate, concordia’. The goal is to promote unity in diversity.
‘Addressing the issue of coexistence in schools requires a social transformation approach that seeks new meanings for human coexistence through participation and deliberation. The aim of this approach is to dignify human beings by promoting innovation and improving coexistence. This, in turn, enables the development of basic competencies for living associatively, managing and assuming conflicts, and achieving adequate levels of empowerment and emancipation’ (Arístegui et al. Hacia una pedagogía de la convivencia, 2005).
