Art in public space has been a constant we can see if we look at the History of Art. But the concept of public art has not been static, it has expanded over the time and, from a commemorative art focused on the representations of power, has evolved into a loss of pedestal and towards the inclusion of context and community developing collaborative artistic practices.
The public space, especially urban, has become not only a support, but also a reference of these artistic practices raising issues about the concept of public space. This conference focuses on the analysis of the new relationship established between contemporary art practices, public space and the public. It pays special attention to the main trends and to the most significant changes that have occurred in this contemporary art movement, covering a chronology from the sixties to the present. The conference presents the change occurred in the concept of public art, and also works on the contributions that have been taken place in the critical language for dealing with these new strategies and positions. We will review and analyse with a dynamic approach the most relevant works that allow us to create a good overview of the current relationship between artistic expressions and public space. We will also deal with the new modes of production that have been established in the development of these artistic practices.
